need clear emotional signals ←→ catch subtle shifts

When someone's mood shifts, do you need it spelled out, or do you catch it in the small things?

Some people need to be told before they know something's wrong. Others can tell while the other person is still smiling and saying it's fine. Neither end is better. Too sharp and you get tired on other people's behalf; a little blunt is steadier. We don't take your word for it either. “I'm very perceptive” doesn't count. What counts is the time you told us about: did you see it yourself, or only after someone said so? And did you ever find out whether you'd read it right?
